INTERVIEW

DRAFT 1 FOR PERSONAL STATEMENT.

SHOWREEL

Media and Film

Over the last few years my passion for the media has developed significantly, as I have learnt the power of film and how the camera works. My desire to work in the industry has become my main target. My interests lie in the cinematography world of film, which became apparent when I started to analyse the use of shots in film in recent years. I hope to develop a more thorough perception of combined visual and film language. Outside of college, I regularly create my own designs and creative artwork which began during lockdown. This was only supposed to be a hobby, but it has now extended into actual work, I have edited music videos for artists alongside logos for companies. In particular to outside college work , I have had a wide variety of voluntary work experience opportunities including filming for a local football club called ‘ Kings Lynn Town’ which is then  transmitted to BT sports and also filming at the Foreign Office in London for a news broadcast for BBC.

Currently, I am studying media production level 3 at the college of west Anglia. As a creative individual, I greatly enjoyed the coursework modules in Media Studies, where we had to work as part of a team or individually to produce a wide variety of projects such as music videos , advertising campaigns and client work. I anticipate with pleasure the upcoming projects that we will have to do and have really enjoyed all aspects of my course so far.

The theory behind production that we learnt as part of our ‘mise en scene' module last year also stirs great interest within me, as I feel that an in-depth understanding of techniques is equally, if not more, important than the act of creation itself. I believe that a wider spectrum of the understanding of the media industry and the analysed methods of production is required in order to give a more developed insight into the more specific creative process of film. As well as a passion for media and film, I also have a variety of other hobbies. As I have said before I design and edit pieces of art to help me develop a wider knowledge of the media world. With all the activities including regular work experience I can gather a developed and early knowledge for the film and media industry. I actively engage with college life and have also helped on drama sets to develop my knowledge around the fil world.

I believe will make an active asset to your university, and will involve myself in student world and activities when there is opportunity. However, my love of film and media will ensure that my course will take utmost importance. Like the world-famous cinematographer Roger Deakins stated ‘’ What's seemingly a simple thing can actually be the hardest to achieve’’.  I hope I will come out of university achieving the very best that I believe I can do and push myself further to make myself distinctive in this industry.

I got someone to proof read my personal statement and here is the notes they wrote on it.

Media and Film

Very small and not correct structure

want this so packed with good stuff that there’s no room for rambling

do not find it very passionate either say how the art of media makes you feel and what it is to you. Say why you should be chosen to study this for the next three years over the next candidate

I think you have misunderstood what the opening should be – it should speak about media rather than tom Narramore, the rest of the statement is about you

Some words I like are dynamic, redefining boundaries, paradoxical, fruitful, flair

Over the last few years slow opening my passion avoid the word passion, only use it once maximum and not in very first sentence, this sentence needs to pull people in and be a big wow factor, this is the very first thing the university will read about you. It needs to be unique and powerful for I wouldn’t say THE media, I think just media sounds better the media has developed significantly, as I have learnt the don’t just say power of film and media, you want the reader to really feel how powerful you find this- examples would be good maybe power of film and how the camera works. My desire quite boring. You need to say what media means to you not just that you have a desire to work in it. Most people applying for this course do. to work in the industry has become my main target. My interests this is getting better you are being more specific but this sentence can still be more exciting –throw in some fancy adjectives lie in the cinematography world of film, which became apparent when I started to analyse the use of shots in film in recent years. I hope to develop a more thorough perception of combined visual and film language again a bit boring and I think most people hope this, we will tear this bit apart a little bit and use the language and ideas but in a more inspiring way. Outside of college this is where the structure isn’t quite right, there should be a separate paragraph where you talk about this, I regularly create my own designs and creative artwork which began during lockdown also this is an amazing thing you’ve done, let’s make sure it sounds that way. This was only supposed to be a hobby I like the idea but I don’t think it sounds very impressive, but it has now extended into actual work good idea to mention but I would put paid work rather than actual work, I have edited music videos for artists alongside logos for companies yessss amazing!! Add in some details here too, maybe say this has allowed me to experiment with a certain effect that has and how this has changed your perception on media and the way you work. In particular to outside college work , I have had a wide variety of voluntary work not my favourite way to word this incredible opportunity you’ve had but love that you’re name dropping these big companies – this is exactly what we want experience opportunities including filming for a local football club called ‘ Kings Lynn Town’ which is then  transmitted to BT sports and also filming at the Foreign Office in London for a news broadcast for BBC. Your statement is still quite small at the moment, I’m sure we can add in more detail about these experiences

Currently, I am studying media production level 3 at the college of west Anglia we don’t need to waste word count on where you are studying, they probably don’t know the area and also they can see this in your ucas details anyway. As a creative individual GOOD , I greatly enjoyed the coursework modules in Media Studies, where we had to work as part of a team or individually mention this elsewhere to produce a wide variety of projects such as music videos , advertising campaigns and client work. It would be good to speak about a few of these projects in detail I anticipate with pleasure the upcoming projects that we will have to do and have really enjoyed all aspects of my course so far.  Nice to say you enjoy it but can say it in a much better way. Don’t just say you enjoy it, you need to show that

The theory behind production that we learnt as part of our ‘mise en scene' module last year also stirs great interest within me,  good to talk about individual modules that have interested you but I don’t like the word stir. as I feel that an in-depth understanding of techniques is equally, if not more, important than the act of creation itself good. I believe that a wider spectrum of the understanding of the media industry and the analysed methods of production is required in order to give a more developed insight into the more specific creative process of film ok. As well as a passion for media and film, I also have a variety of other hobbies this should be a new paragraph. As I have said before AHHH IF YOU ARE WASTING WORD COUNT REPEATING YOURSELF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY I design and edit pieces of art to help me develop a wider knowledge of the media world. With all the activities including regular work experience I can gather a developed and early knowledge for the film and media industry. Not here I actively engage with college life and have also helped on drama sets to develop my knowledge around the fil world. I like this but this isn’t the only thing you do, you are a very well-rounded person, lets show that

I believe will make an active asset to your university, and will involve myself in student world and activities when there is opportunity I’m not sure if I love this or hate it. I kind of don’t like saying I believe I will make an asset – maybe say as you can see I would be an asset, also the bit about involving yourself in opportunities is very good, you should already have explained how you always grab opportunities and put yourself out there, maybe put an example of an opportunity you think you would be interested in at uni. However, my love of film and media will ensure that my course will take utmost importance seems an odd thing to say – maybe it’s the way you have worded it. I think it would be better to say I am able to prioritise time and I have time management skills and would be able to ensure that I can balance enrichment activities alongside my course. But its good that you stressed your love for film and media. Lets make sure that gets in there somewhere else in the statement. Like the world-famous cinematographer Roger Deakins stated ‘’ What's seemingly a simple thing can actually be the hardest to achieve’’. So so random and meaningless  I hope I will come out of university achieving the very best that I believe I can do everyone hopes this and push myself further to make myself distinctive in this industry. Perfect

I want you to absolutely love your statement and be so proud of it when you are done. This is credit to you and the passion of your subject all summed up. It should be meaningful and that will show to a uni. Don’t forget you are selling yourself to the uni, do yourself justice!!

We need a bit of a shuffle about

Start with an opening about what media means to you – this really has to be unique and grab the attention of others and show how passionate you are and your unique take on the subject – don’t say I am passionate – show it!!

I would now talk about your course, as your course is so related to the subject you want to do. Please talk in detail and mention certain modules and projects that stood out and why.

Next comes the stuff you have done to enhance your love and knowledge of the subject.

PLEASE mention your awards!!!

Next comes work experience, don’t state what you’ve done, talk about some details of the experience and how they developed or changed your ideas.

Now we have a little bit about all the non-media stuff that makes you a well rounded desireable person who would be an asset to the uni (NCS, sport!!, volunteering?, Managing six aside, part time jobs, and more)

A very small ending that briefly mentions the future – you kind of got this

Don’t be disheartened what you’ve done is so good so far but we want it to be the best it can be. My statement had about 15 drafts but I was over the moon with it in the end. Everyone has a set of grades and details but this is what shows who you really are and should be a credit to you and make you stand out from the next candiated.

Currently, I am studying UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production at the College of West Anglia. As a creative individual I greatly enjoyed the coursework modules in Media Studies where we work as part of a team or individually to produce a wide variety of projects such as music videos, advertising campaigns and client work.

FINAL PERSONAL STATEMENT

Whilst cinematography has dramatically evolved since the birth of moving picture, with the likes of iconic cinematographers, such as the Lumiere brothers, the fundamental ability of cinematic effect to make an audience feel a complete spectrum of emotions, is something that has been ever present in film. This dynamic and involving skill of filmmakers captivates my passion for the industry.

The way the modernist movement, from the start of colour TV to 4K cinemas, has done a full loop, as we have transitioned to a fashion of vintage techniques and equipment, influences the way I work with cameras. The inspiring film production company A24 give an insight into the use of sentimental techniques, from the formidable 90’s and its astute use of colour, to the innovative, unique film, ‘The Lighthouse’ which creates a nostalgic impact on viewers, using aspect ratio 1.19:1. As well as developing appreciation for the works of those who built film as we know it today, I’ve also inherited a desire to re-define boundaries.

Undertaking a diverse range of topics in my media course, I soon concluded my fascination in the power of film had developed into a hunger, more prominent than ever, to work in the industry. The project that stretched my capability most, was the creation of a music video: II embarked to challenge my technical boundaries, from zooming through certain shots with masking, to colour-grading every shot. My enthusiasm, when editing, oozes through my work. Although I am specific in the standards I want my work to reach, I am also highly malleable, as my skills and dedication are transferrable.

Making a documentary on the topic of politics, something I was not previously well-informed in, required use of research to ensure, while stepping out of my comfort zone, I maintained a quality of work I’d have pride in.

The in depth understanding of techniques is equally, if not more, important than the film process itself. Reflecting on my projects in evaluation, has been the greatest aid to my learning and has fuelled my cinematography interest.

My dedication and work ethic haven’t gone unnoticed at college, and I’ve been recognised as standing out from my peers, through two awards- Music Video of the Year and the Edexcel Award.

I was chosen to compete at ‘’WorldSkillsUK’’, demonstrating my reliable nature and the fact I’m regarded as an asset. I loved the creative process; working as a team with a variety of talents and was proud to work to a competition standard that got us to the final.

My love for film goes further than the course, and I relish opportunities to enhance my knowledge, for example, I use my spare time to create unique edits. Whilst this began as art, creating a social media profile led to interested businesses from nail technician, to vape company and rapper. I designed websites, logos, labels, album covers, and music videos for clients. As a creative individual, there was nothing better than being able to make profit from doing what I enjoyed. This developed my skills in professionalism and working to client deadlines. Working for others allowed me to experiment with effects and themes I hadn’t used before, which is crucial in the industry, as it’s necessary to combine your own distinctive style while following client briefs to make them happy.

I often push myself out of my comfort zone in hope of gathering a developed and early knowledge of the film industry. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside the BBC, filming with Black Magic cameras in the Foreign Office; SpringboardTV, filming an advert for a factory and gigs; and a BAFTA Nominee, filming a football club for BT Sport. Putting college skills into real filming situations and operating broadcast quality equipment has been invaluable. Filming for BT Sport enhanced my tracking skills, as I had to ensure I always had the football in shot, whilst remaining stable.

I’m a well-rounded person and my altruistic personality was evident at a Macmillan event, in which I volunteered as a waiter. NCS, is another scheme, which involved our group raising money to spend on refurbishing the garden at a Salvation Army. Working in a team comes naturally to me, after dedicating 12 years to playing for my local football team. I love being a team player, but have also had leadership roles, managing a six-aside team. I have a part-time job, alongside my college commitments.

I believe the combination of skills, knowledge and attributes I have demonstrated would be perfectly suited for your course, and I anticipate, with excitement, the opportunity to further develop, both in university and the industry, as I drive myself to stand out as distinctive and to leave a lasting impression.
